‘Sensory Integration’ the integration of our senses for use. Sensory Integration theory and therapy is the framework occupational therapists use to support children who are typical healthy children who present with developmental delay and learning challenges in school. It is not related to IQ. Many children have a very high IQ but cannot read or write. The focus is on the sensory motor development of the human body. The neuroscience, the nuts and bolts, of how the human brain and body grows and develops the skills for learning and daily living tasks. The therapist is skilled in assessing and identifying the gaps in a child’s development and providing non directive play therapy to support the child to develop those essential skills through engaging in specific types of play. Only the child can develop themselves by engaging in the appropriate play activities. Sensory Integration begins in utero and we can support mothers with babies, toddlers, children and teenagers. Its never too late to improve the wiring of your brain and body, we are all a work in progress.
